Ramsgate at a glance

The quaint village of Ramsgate is situated on the KwaZulu-Natal Lower South Coast. A favourite destination of generations of South Africans it has seen seasonal influxes of domestic tourists since the 1950's.

It is located at the mouth of the Ibilanhlolo River, meaning "the marvellous boiler", due to the bubbles caused by strong currents.

In 1922, a painter and violin maker called Paul Buck opened a trading store alongside the river, and the building still survives to this day.

Ramsgate has an arty character and some excellent eateries, The Crayfish Inn and Lobster Pot will resonate with many past visitors, but none more so that the famous Waffle House which was started in 1957 and originally called the Tea House of the Blue Lagoon.

Ramsgate is lucky to benefit from the input of many dedicated residents and has a vibrant NGO community comprising the Ramsgate Conservancy, Ramsgate Tourism and Ramsgate Ratepayer's organisations. The visitor can benefit from the community driven tourism information centre and the Eco-information centre located overlooking the Ramsgate main beach from the Whale viewing deck.

Ramsgate is also a Special Rating Area, with its own Non-Profit Company (The Ramsgate Urban Renewal Project) providing transparency and good governance oversight of the use of the funds collected monthly in addition to the rates paid by each property owner. The bulk of the funds has been channelled to give operational sustainability and growth potential to the Ramsgate Community Policing Forum which has proven itself supremely effective in supporting the South African police Services in combatting crime in the area.

A superb place to live and invest in property, Ramsgate has so much to offer to resident, local and international visitors across the board.
