Every year around June / July 'sardine fever' hits the South Coast as massive shoals of the small silvery fish migrate northwards, occasionally beaching in their millions to the delight for residents. The shoals are followed by game fish including barracuda, yellow tail and sharks. Above the shoals, cape gannets circle and dive in a feeding frenzy that must be seen to be believed. Local fisherman rush along the beach with nets hoping to be on hand when the shoals come ashore after being herded into the shallows by the game fish. If you are a fisherman this is the place to be.
Port Edward is the southern most town in KwaZulu-Natal and borders the Eastern Cape Province and as with most of the KZN Lower South Coast it has been a favourite holiday destination for seasonal visitors from the interior of the country.
In 1925 the original village was laid out and was named in honour of HRH The Prince of Wales, who later became HRH King Edward VIII.
