Amanzimtoti at a glance
Place of sweet waters
The naming of Amanzimtoti is generally attributed to the renowned Zulu King Shaka, who stopped here in 1828 with his army during one of their campaigns. Legend has it that after being given water to drink from the local river, he remarked ‘kanti amanzi mtoti’ (so the water is sweet), thereby giving the river, and the town that later developed around it, the name of Amanzimtoti.
Six hundred odd km from JHB, 60km from DBN International Airport and conveniently situated just 25km south of central Durban, the booming holiday destination of Amanzimtoti, or Toti as it is known to locals, offers almost everything for the discerning traveler. There is a first class infrastructure of modern shopping malls, excellent accommodation options and restaurants, as well as a wide array of leisure activities – both on land and at sea!
A variety of pleasant seaside communities extend from Isipingo (known for its large and vital Indian community), the industrial hubs of Prospection and South Gate and the residential communities of Athlone Park and Umbogintwini southwards through Amanzimtoti, its picturesque suburbs of Doonside, Warner Beach, Winkelspruit, Illovo Beach and Karridene, as well as the important historical base of Adams Mission. Other centres comprise KwaMakhutha, Ezimbokodweni, Magabheni, Umbumbulu, Kingsburgh, St Winifred’s, Lovu and Umnini.
Lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, wide expanses of white sandy beaches and tranquil lagoons offer safe swimming and a host of leisure activities and watersports, such as fishing, surfing and paddle skiing. Heading the list of ocean experiences is scuba diving at the famous Aliwal Shoal, which is recognized as one of the top ten dive sites world wide. Also out at sea, whale and dolphin watching excursions make for a must-do eco-experience.
Closer to shore, the Sardine Run is an extremely popular annual event. Taking place every year around June and July, this large scale marine phenomenon sees enormous schools of sardines migrating up the coast from their breeding grounds in the cold southern oceans, followed by thousands of game fish, sharks and dolphins.
Heading off the beach, visitors can embark on a fascinating nature trail through pristine indigenous bush or mangrove forest, play a round of golf at Amanzimtoti or Umkomaas Country Club, or enjoy some quiet respite at the tranquil Japanese-style gardens. There is also Hutchinson Park, housing a plethora of community sporting facilities, such as rugby, soccer, tennis, squash and bowls. Awaiting the birder, outstanding bird watching prospects.
Within the area there are 2 English High Schools, numerous primary schools, crèches, and an Afrikaans Primary and High School.
Amanzimtoti also boasts a Value Centre and our brand new shopping centre, The Galleria. With all the big brands as tenants, as well as 11 movie houses, these Ensure that all your shopping needs are catered for.
