Woodlands at a glance

Woodlands is situated +/- 15 kilometres south of the Durban CBD, is a stone’s throw from Chatsworth, previously an Indian only area, and Umlazi which was previously a Black only area. Woodlands is made up of two areas, close to each other, one known as “Woodlands Valley” and the other affectionately known as “Old Woodlands”. The latter is so-called because it was built towards the end of the 2nd World War for the soldiers returning from the war and who would be working for the Durban Corporation.” The Valley” was built a little later and was designed for the younger people and became known as “Nappy Valley”
It has remained a blue-collar area with most of the buyers for these properties still being workers for the municipality and government, working as clerks, teachers and nurses.

Woodlands is divided from Montclair by the area’s main road, Kenyon Howden Road, which has a number of doctors rooms, and a general assumption is that the properties on the entire road will eventually be used as businesses. The Woodlands home owners have access to the Montclair shopping centre’s, the Pick’nPay centre and the KwikSpar situated conveniently close to Woodlands.
There are a number of schools in Woodlands, with a co-ed high school, New Forest High School, a primary school and a ‘special needs’ school in Old Woodlands, and a school for mentally handicapped children in “the Valley”.  There are also a number of pre-primary schools operating in the Woodlands area. The girls high school, Mowat Park is in the Montclair area but takes in pupils from all the surrounding areas including Woodlands and Umlazi.

The transport in the area consists of a railway station, there is a municipal bus service and there are mini-bus taxis running all day, a pre-requisite for which is that the owner of the taxi has to own a property in the area. This does tend to make passengers feel a little safer when travelling.

Woodland’s is made up, primarily, of single residential homes but there is a section in Old Woodlands where complexes with duplexes and simplexes have been built.

Woodlands remains a safe area where the blue collar worker is comfortable, can afford the cost of the properties in the area and can relate easily to his/her neighbours.
