Woodhaven at a glance

Woodhaven is the newest suburb in the south Durban districts of Montclair/Yellowwood Park/Woodhaven/Woodlands. Woodhaven was first developed by the mining group Goldfields of South Africa in the early 1970’s. The land was bought from the Durban City Council and it was planned to construct and sell about 575 housing units.

Woodhaven was considered to be one of the pioneers of higher density development in South Africa and set the stage and guidelines for many similar developments. The first 3 bedroom, 90sqm units were sold for the princely sum of R12 000.00.  Because of the demand, the later size and design criteria was improved to suit the more discerning buyer and 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom homes were added.

The area consists mainly of houses and blocks of duplexes, but in the last decade three new blocks have sprung up, the land having been bought by a developer and on which he built 2 large blocks of flats consisting of over 200 units in each block and 1 block of free-standing simplexes. These were designed for the people moving from the townships to the previously “white” areas.

To provide for the ever increasing population, a pre-primary school and a church were built and these are still in action today. The primary and high schools for the Woodhaven inhabitants are close by in the neighbouring areas of Yellowwood Park, Montclair and Woodlands.

The transport system is considered to be good, with Municipal buses running from Durban CBD to most of the outlying suburbs, of which Woodhaven is one. And of course there are the inevitable mini-bus taxi’s which run all day to and from various destinations in and around Durban. One pre-requisite for having a taxi working in the area is that the owner must also own a property in the area. This tends to make transport a little safer as the owners will ensure good conduct from their drivers.
