One of the most popular  is the Liberty Midlands Mall  plus  Cascades situated in the Northern suburb of Montrose, Nedbank Plaza in Scottsville, Hayfields  Mall, Southgate Cenre on the Richmond Road , then Capital Centre in Longmarket Street. Recently opened is Brookside Mall with numerous shops.


The city is the host of the start and finish of the ever popular Comrades Marathon  in alternate years.  Midmar Dam which is close to Howich features  excellent watersports and the annual Midmar Mile.  There are many Gyms , Maritzburg Country Club , Maritzburg Golf Club, Collegians Club .
