Ballito at a glance

Ballito is the centre of the Dolphin Coast which encompasses many towns and beaches flanked by the turquoise warm Indian Ocean, North-wards Shakas Rock, Salt Rock, Sheffield Beach, Tinley Manor. To the South, Zimbali, Westbrook, Tongaat, Desainagar and La Mercy.
 
It was proclaimed a township in 1954 and reached borough status in 1986 and is aptly named the Dolphin Coast after the bottlenose dolphins, who frolic here all year.  Whales are also a common sighting.

It started as a holiday destination and is now a destination of choice for family home owners for suburban living and offers a lifestyle to be envied.

It is approximately 40 kilometers from Durban and forms part of the KwaDukuza local Municipality and iLembe district Municipality.

Business Sector

Ballito’s business sector has grown with a large commercial business park adjoining the N2 freeway and is the fastest growing commercial node in the Southern hemisphere.

Facilities

There are four major shopping malls namely, Lifestyle Centre, The Junction, The Ballito Bay Mall and Tiffany’s which recently opened in Salt Rock.
 
The Netcare Alberlita Hospital takes care if all health needs.  

There are many hotels and self-catering accommodation catering for all budgets.  

The 2.5 kilometer promenade runs along the beach front for leisurely walks, jogging and the beautiful safe swimming beaches are alluring.  Magnificent beaches are Ballito’s hallmark with Willard Beach achieving Blue Flag status and Tinley Manor exhibiting an impressive lagoon buzzing with wild birdlife.

For the golfing enthusiasts, Ballito boasts 5 golf courses, namely Darnall Country Club, Prince’s Grant Golf Estate, Umhlali Country Club, Zimbali Golf Estate and Simbithi-Eco Estate.

Between May through September passionate fisherman are able to fish with a required license for Cob in the Tongaat River mouth.  Ballito is well known for the best rock fishing.

Sheffield Reef, Tiffany’s Reef, Big Bream Reef and Lemon Fish Reef along the Dolphin Coast offers incredible reefs for spear-fishing, deep-sea fishing as well as scuba diving and snorkeling with qualified instructors supplying equipment for these water sports.  

Exciting news for birdwatchers is the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve which is also home to a small variety of game.

It is home to Umhali Primary School, Aston College, Crawford College and Trinity House at Palm Lakes. The new year will see the opening of a new private school at Mount Richmore.

Growth

The development of the King Shaka International Airport has contributed significantly to the growth of Ballito.  

The main entrance to Ballito from the N2 is currently being upgraded with the widening of the road to four lanes and a new town centre planned.

Numz Island is to become Africa’s leading adventure park by 2018 with their Waterpark launching in 2014.
